The Chopta–Tungnath–Chandrashila Trek is one of the most enchanting and spiritually uplifting treks in the Indian Himalayas. Located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, this journey blends divine mythology with breathtaking natural beauty. Often referred to as the “Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand,” Chopta serves as the gateway to Tungnath—the highest Shiva temple in the world—and Chandrashila, a summit known for its spectacular Himalayan panoramas.
Despite being a short trek, it offers a rich mix of experiences—spiritual significance, alpine meadows, snow-covered landscapes, birdwatching, and cultural immersion—making it ideal for both beginners and seasoned trekkers ...
Chopta is situated at an altitude of approximately 8,790 ft (2,680 meters). The trail ascends to Tungnath Temple at 12,073 ft and further to Chandrashila Peak at around 13,000 ft. From the summit, trekkers are rewarded with panoramic views of iconic Himalayan peaks including Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, Kedarnath Dome, and Bandarpoonch.
The region lies within the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, rich in biodiversity and home to rare Himalayan flora and fauna.
The trek holds deep mythological significance. Tungnath Temple, over 1,000 years old, is part of the revered Panch Kedar temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to legend, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva here after the Mahabharata war.
Chandrashila, meaning “Moon Rock,” is believed to be the meditation site of Lord Rama and the place where the Moon God performed penance. These legends add a profound spiritual aura to the trek.
Rolling alpine meadows surrounded by oak, deodar, and rhododendron forests make Chopta a paradise for nature lovers and photographers.
The highest Shiva temple in the world, offering a serene and mystical atmosphere amidst snow-clad peaks.
The region is home to Himalayan monals, musk deer, and vibrant wildflowers like rhododendrons, primulas, and orchids.
Chopta is well-connected by road to Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Ukhimath. The trek distance is approximately 3.5 km to Tungnath and 1.5 km further to Chandrashila. Though short, the steep ascent makes it physically engaging.
The trek is categorized as easy to moderate. It is perfect for beginners while still offering a rewarding challenge due to its altitude gain and steep climb to Chandrashila.
Nearby villages like Duggalbitta and Ukhimath showcase traditional Garhwali culture. Ukhimath also serves as the winter seat of Kedarnath Temple.
As the trek lies within an eco-sensitive zone, trekkers are encouraged to follow sustainable practices—avoid plastic, respect local culture, and keep the trails clean.
The Chopta–Tungnath–Chandrashila Trek is more than just a hike—it is a journey through nature, spirituality, and Himalayan heritage. Whether you seek adventure, peace, or divine connection, this trek offers an unforgettable experience in every season.
